Key takeaways

  • An agentic avatar understands a request, uses your knowledge and tools, takes an action and hands off to a person when it should.
  • Actions are what separate an agent from a talking FAQ: raising a ticket, capturing a lead, taking a visitor to the right page.
  • Every action needs a guardrail. Ask what the agent may do alone, what it confirms first and what it never touches.

An agentic AI avatar is a photorealistic digital person that does more than reply. It understands what the visitor wants, draws on your knowledge and tools, takes an action such as raising a ticket, and hands the conversation to a human when that is the better outcome. The word "agentic" describes that last part: it acts.

Four capabilities to look for

  1. Understand. It follows a spoken request in the visitor's own language, including follow-up questions, without a menu.
  2. Know. It answers from your documents, policies and pages, not from general internet knowledge. A good one shows its source. See the AI knowledge base.
  3. Act. It does something in your systems or on your site: creates a support ticket, captures a lead on paid plans, opens the right page with Site Navigation.
  4. Hand off. It recognises when a person should take over and passes the conversation and the captured details across.

A maturity ladder

Most "AI agents" on the market sit on the first rung. Knowing where a product stands tells you what it will really do for you.

LevelWhat it doesExample
1. AnswersReplies to common questions from a fixed script or FAQOpening hours
2. GroundedAnswers from your own documents and cites the source fileWhat does our refund policy say about digital goods?
3. ActsTakes actions in your tools and on your pagesRaises a ticket, captures a lead, opens the pricing page
4. Custom actionsRuns actions you define inside your own appApplies a coupon, books a slot, starts a return

Custom actions, with a confirmation step

In a mobile app, the React Native SDK lets you register the actions the agent may call. Each has a name, a description the agent reads to decide when to use it, the parameters it needs and a handler that runs in your app. Mark an action with confirm: true and the agent asks the user first.

React Native
const actions = useMemo(() => [{
  name: 'apply_coupon',
  description: 'Apply a coupon code to the cart',
  params: { type: 'object', properties: { code: { type: 'string' } }, required: ['code'] },
  handler: async ({ code }) => cart.applyCoupon(String(code)),
}, {
  name: 'cancel_order',
  description: 'Cancel the current order',
  confirm: true,
  handler: () => orders.cancelCurrent(),
}], []);

Guardrails that matter

  • Ask before anything irreversible. Site Navigation asks before it buys, pays, deletes, cancels or submits.
  • Keep secrets out. It never reads or fills passwords, card numbers or one-time codes, and it masks personal data.
  • Limit where it can go. You allow or block paths, and mark elements to skip, to confirm or to rename.
  • Always leave a way out. Every conversation needs a route to a person. Read how to design human handoff.

Questions to ask any vendor

  • Which actions can it take today, and which of them can I define myself?
  • What does it do when it does not know? Does it say so or guess?
  • Can I see a transcript of every conversation?
  • How do I turn an action off for one page, one agent or one customer?

Frequently asked questions

What is an agentic AI avatar?

A photorealistic digital person that understands a request, uses your knowledge and tools, takes actions such as raising a ticket, and hands off to a human when needed.

Is an agentic avatar the same as a chatbot?

No. A chatbot replies. An agentic avatar also acts: it can create tickets, capture leads and take visitors to the right page. See AI avatar vs chatbot.

Can it take actions without asking?

You decide. Actions you mark for confirmation make the agent ask first, and Site Navigation always asks before anything that buys, pays, deletes, cancels or submits.
